Free Verse

"Like playing tennis with the net down,"
         said Robert Frost.
Nor rhyme, nor most things "free,"
         there's something lost.
Short, clever, thoughtful, metaphoric, and it flows,
but is it poetry or simply prose?
Is it music, without cadence, beat or bounce,
or poetry, if it's just the thought that counts?
Were Shakespeare, Milton, Keats, and Byron crazy?
Is free verse really modern or just...lazy?
Perhaps you simply will not take the time
to measure out your thoughts or make them rhyme.
It's not just nets you lack; it's lines and refs and calls.
You have a racket, but you're playing without balls.
